First chess video!

I decided to give it a go early today, to try and produce (make) a chess video. Quite simple one, of my randomly chosen game. Here it is:

The game ended quite badly to say the least! But perhaps this little video can work as a lesson.

Bad game but a good reminder!

Started to take part in slow games at Chess.com. First need to play qualification tournament, which consists of 3 games, then possible to play some actual tournaments and more slow games. First game happened early today after midnight hour. I was paired against obviously pretty decent (and probably better) player, with USCF rating over 2000! So I knew I was in for a challenge right away. Best opponents I have ever played have been around 1700 ELO. Until now!

So I had white pieces and after bit of research had noticed just one game of my opponents where one of his opponent had played 1.e4, the opening move that I would play! (As I don´t have premium membership in chess.com, it´s not possible to see more than recent games.) My opponent had responded 1...c6, Caro-Kann defense. This is all I had. So I prepared little bit for C-K. Earlier in the day I played against computer program with rating setting 1620, and so it happened the program would also answer 1...c6! There I tested the exchange variation, got good position but in the end lost badly. So I somehow came into conclusion I should not repeat such try but to go for my old preference the advanced variation. With 4.Bd3...

1. e4 c6 He played it! 2. d4 d5 3. e5 Bf5 4. Bd3 Not the most ambitious or best, but wanted
to play quiet game... 4... Bxd3 5. Qxd3 e6 6. f4 Nh6 7. Nf3 Qa5+ 8. Bd2 Qa6

9. Qxa6 ( 9. O-O was my other option but  9... Qxd3 10. cxd3  would leave
doubled pawns, which I didn´t prefer even though c-file is now also half-open.
On the other hand pawn exchange on c5 would be a fix. 10... Na6 11. a3 and
if now 11... c5?! for example 12. Nc3 Nf5 13. Nb5 ) 9... Nxa6 10. a3?!
( 10. Nc3 was better. Normal development, but I thought it looks ugly! This is one
of my weaknesses in the opening, sometimes not seeing beyond first move that
is.}  ) 10... c5 11. c3?! This may look solid, but is just too passive and
slow. Of course I realized it´s suspicious to play both a3 and c3, but somehow
didn´t see anything better.( 11. Ke2 Stockfish 5 likes this better.)
11... Rc8 Equal. 12. O-O Stockfish´s suggestions Kf2 and Ke2 would have perhaps
worked better! I did think about those alternatives as well. 12... Be7

Here position is still equal, though easier for black. 13. h3? I tried to get control of the
light squares on kingside, but this move is simply based on an oversight.
13. b4 was good, but I considered it somehow too radical to open position
while my pieces are still clumsy. 13... Nf5!=/+ 14. Kh2?! (14. Kf2 missed this option completely.) ( 14. g4? Ng3 Moderate advantage. 15. Rd1 h5 16.g5 ) 14... h5! Here I knew I had messed up badly, black controls now both queen- and kingside! 15. g3? (15. b4 one last chance to play it.
15... cxd4 16. Nxd4 Nxd4 17. cxd4 Rc2! giving black smaller advantage
that in the game.) 15... cxd4−/+  Here black is probably already
winning. 16. Nxd4 Or 16. cxd4 Rc2 16... Nxd4 17. cxd4 Rc2!

18. Rc1?! Looks active, but doesn´t provide much. (18. Ra2 is suggestion of
Stockfish and would have kept the pawn at least. However 18... Kd7 19. Rc1
Rhc8 wasn´t to my taste. 20. Rxc2 Rxc2−/+ white being essentially
completely tied up.) 18... Rxb2 Almost 2 pawn advantage now for black.
19. Rc8+ Bd8 20. Ra8?! Attacking black weakness, but I did feel maybe my
rook should stay on the c-file... ( 20. Kh1 ) 20... Kd7 ( 20... O-O even better)
21. Kh1 Re8! Killing essentially all possible tactics for white.

22.Rxa7 Engine says this is NOT a mistake! Phew. Not that it matters much. 22... Bc7 23. Bc1? ( 23.Bb4 Nxb4 24. axb4 Rxb4 25. Nc3 would have given me more activity, but I
wanted to hang on to my pawn... 23... Rc2 24. Nd2 White´s setup is
ackward to say the least, and will result losing the exchange now. Again, I had
sensed some of these things in my mind but failed to act accordingly! 24...
Kc6 25. Nf3 Bb6 26. Rxa6 bxa6 Rest is just more moves, not much relevance.
27. Rb1 Rc8 ( 27... Rf2 ) 28. Bd2 Kb7 ( 28... Rc4 ) 29. g4 hxg4 30. hxg4 Ka7
31. Bb4 Rh8+ 32. Kg1 Rh3 33. Bc5 Bxc5 34. dxc5 Rxf3 35. c6 Rxc6  0-1

What about the reminder then?

1. Play your own game.
2. Make the game interesting instead of getting busted in 15 moves.
3. Trust your learned instincts.

Tough...

The second simul with computers is proving to be clearly harder. Of course playing black does it´s own part, but this is much heavier and harder to keep focus... Almost 5,5 hours behind, with one game drawn - against the toughest opponent! Positions at 22. - 23. moves:

Result: 3-1  Used time: 5:22:49

Very interesting first experience. Was even bit easier overall, than expected. Issue with time control, had 5 hours time but it went over by almost 23 minutes, since computers took some time to make their last moves while the games were practically decided. Need to keep strict time limit with last one hour for finishing the games only.

Simul update 3

Just over 13 minutes left. Other game decided, score now 1-1. Positions at 30 moves (or less):

lauantai 13. syyskuuta 2014

Simul update 2

After 20 moves:

One game is already over, had to resign after 19 moves! Well, others going better... One I should be clearly winning, other I am up a pawn with little risk of losing, and the last one... that´s wide open, and the crucial one.

I have used ridiculous amount of time already. Just 50 minutes left! But for 2 games, it would be doable.

Simul updates; game positions every 10 moves

Simul has started. I have used so far about 1 hour and 15 minutes, which is quite a lot for just first 10 moves. It means I need to raise playing speed towards the end basically. But fortunately for me, the positions that happened seem to be pretty much as I would like them in these circumstances...

Chess simul against dedicated chess computers!

That´s right, idea of today. I´ve got six (6) different dedicated chess computers now, and since two games are still going (in machines´ memories) the first simul will be me against 4 of the older ones:

ChessCurious - Chess 2001 (Level 6)
ChessCurious - Kasparov Travel Champion (Level 5 +EASY)
ChessCurious - Super Enterprise (Level 7)
ChessCurious - Fidelity Excellence (Level 3 +EASY)

Levels are the highest I haven´t beaten yet, except in case of Chess 2001 which I have beaten at all it´s levels but going them through again. Easy-options for 2/4 computers meaning no permanent brain, sometime in future I will allow it making the challenge bigger. Time limit will be 60 mins./game plus 1 hour extra for compulsory work etc. so total 5 hours for all 4 games.

The dedicated chess computers:

                                                              Chess 2001

Kasparov Travel Champion 2100

Super Enterprise 210

Fidelity Excellence

Let the games begin!

Tired of chess

...but not quite as one would think of it. Played 2,5 games today, which takes some energy! That´s all.

Now I want to analyze a game. Let´s see... Yes, the first game against my new chess computer.

10. 9. 2014  ChessCurious - Novag Super VIP (Fixed Time, Level 1)
Analyzed with Stockfish 5 & Houdini 4 Pro

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 d6 The Philidor Defense. 3.d4 3.Bc4 is another way to play here. 3...Nf6 3...exd4 being more usual. 4. Bc4 Nxe4 5. dxe5 c6 6. O-O d5 All theory up till here. 7. Re1?! Dubious. 7. Bb3 is the choice of engines, 7.Bd3 is also playable.

7...Nxf2! 8.Kxf2 Bc5+ Or 8...dxc4 9.Qxd8+ Kxd8. 9. Be3 Bxe3+ 10. Rxe3 dxc4

                                                 Slight advantage for black.

11. Qxd8+ 11.Qd6 is an interesting alternative. 11...Na6. Kxd8 12. Nbd2 I pondered also the more aggressive 12.Ng5?! but 12...Ke7 with moderate advantage for black. Be6 12...b5?! 13.Ne4 13. Ne4? 13.Nd4 would have won the pawn, for example 13...Re8 (13...b5? 14.a4!) 14.Nxe6 Rxe6 15.Nxc4 Nd7 Equal. 13...Nd7 Black´s advantage.

14. a4? This is surprisingly another error. 14...Re8? Waste of a move. 14...Kc7. 15. Nd6 Dream position for knight. 15...Rf8 16. Nxb7+ Kc7

17. Nd6? This return is also mistake! 17.Na5! 17...Nxe5? 17...f6! Undermining the knight. 18. Nb5+ cxb5 19. Rxe5 bxa4! Only move keeping the advantage.

20. Rxa4 Rfd8? 20...Rfb8! 21. Ke2? 21.c3 would have given equality. I find it peculiar that white can allow black to put his rook deeper on the d-file. 21...a6? This is what I would call a time trouble move, even without time trouble! 21...Rdb8 and 21...h6 were good options. 22. h3? 22.Nd2! Rd4 23.b3 with equality. 22...Rab8!

23. Rxa6?! I do think however that taking this pawn is practical choice. 23.Rc5+. 23...Rxb2 Black should be winning here. 24. Ne1 Passive, but best. 24...Kb7 25. Rea5

Could white force perpetual here? That was my idea anyway. 25...c3? 25...Bd5. 26.Ra7+ Kb6 27. R7a6+ Kc7 28. Ra7+ 28.Rc5. 28...Kc6 29. R7a6+? 29.R5a6. 29...Rb6 Moderate advantage for black.

30. Rxb6+ Or 30.Nd3 Rxa6 31.Rxa6+ Kb5 32.Ra3! 30...Kxb6 31. Ra3! White must put pressure to this pawn. 31...Rd2+? This may look like powerful move, but it isn´t. 31...Re8 and 31...Bc4+ would have kept the advantage. 32. Ke3 Now black has again just little edge.

32...f5!? 33. Rxc3 Rd1 34. Nf3 Or 34.Nd3 but I chose the text move because it gave black chance to exchange at least the rooks, which I found pleasant. 34...Bd5 35. Rd3 Rxd3+ 35...Bxf3. 36. cxd3 36.Kxd3 would have been fine too. 36...Kc5

Only white could win here, but...

37. Kf4 Bxf3 38.gxf3 Kd4 39. Kxf5 Kxd3 40. h4 g6+ 41. Kg4 h6 42. Kf4 Kd4 Even 42...Kd2 would be drawing here.

43. Kg4 Ke5 44. f4+ Ke4 45. h5 gxh5+ 46. Kxh5 Kxf4 47. Kxh6  ½-½

Well, this was all-in-all quite appropriate first game. I played inaccurately early on, computer snapped a pawn, but also played inaccurately to lose the winning edge, and we arrived at an endgame which left no chance for either side to win, as the computer really played it practically perfectly! Decent first round of play.

Kxf2 Bc5+ 9. Be3 Bxe3+ 10. Rxe3 dxc4 11. Qxd8+ Kxd8 12. Nbd2 Be6 13. Ne4 Nd7
14. a4 Re8 15. Nd6 Rf8 16. Nxb7+ Kc7 17. Nd6 Nxe5 18. Nb5+ cxb5 19. Rxe5 bxa4
20. Rxa4 Rfd8 21. Ke2 a6 22. h3 Rab8 23. Rxa6 Rxb2 24. Ne1 Kb7 25. Rea5 c3 26.
Ra7+ Kb6 27. R7a6+ Kc7 28. Ra7+ Kc6 29. R7a6+ Rb6

Being pawn down in inferior endgame. Interesting.

EDIT. The rest of the game:

30. Rxb6+ Kxb6 31. Ra3 Rd2+ 32. Ke3 f5 33. Rxc3 Rd1 34. Nf3 Bd5 35. Rd3 Rxd3+ 36. cxd3 Kc5 37. Kf4 Bxf3 38.gxf3 Kd4 39. Kxf5 Kxd3 40. h4 g6+ 41. Kg4 h6 42. Kf4 Kd4 43. Kg4 Ke5 44. f4+ Ke4 45. h5 gxh5+ 46. Kxh5 Kxf4 47. Kxh6  ½-½

So, the first game against my new pet ended in a quite balanced draw. What really impressed me most, was how mature it´s endgame play was - practically perfect! Although allowing those exchanges earlier was dubious to my mind, it had no trouble whatsoever in the resulting KPP vs KPP endgame. Wonderful.

Going to get my new chess computer!

Exciting day, post informed me that I have one (Novag) waiting for me. Something I don´t have already. To be continued, after walk to centrum and back...
